Looking Ahead: Can You Bring a Satisfying and Thrilling Journey to Quarry?
From "Until Dawn" to the "Black Collection" series, "narrative oriented horror games" have been engraved in the DNA of Supermassive Games. Although the Black Album series, which is rumored to have 8 installments in collaboration with Bandai Namco, has only reached its third installment, Supermassive Games has started anew with 2K Games, launching a new IP called "Quarry Shock". It has to be said that they have confidence in their own work efficiency and project management.
This new work, which will be released on June 10th, is deeply influenced by teenage horror movies and monster movies, and is full of the visual appeal of classic 80s horror movies. It is said to be a spiritual sequel to "Until Dawn". Based solely on the publicly available information, including multiplayer mode and non interactive movie mode, I am curious about the actual performance of Quarry Shock.
There is still some time before the official release, and we played the trial version of Quarry Shock in advance, experiencing the three chapters in the game, which brings a bit of forward-looking information to players who are interested in this game.
This trial version does not include the official preface content that was previously released, so you can directly enter the first chapter of the story. On the last day of the summer camp at the Hackett Quarry, several young instructors were able to relax after getting rid of their little brats and parents. At the bonfire party that night, a heartfelt adventure caused two couples with hidden feelings to become jealous, and the party ended unhappily. In fact, this is just the beginning of a series of subsequent thrillers.
According to publicly available official information, many people speculate that the story of this game may be a series of murders like Friday the 13th, so it may be expected that this game will be a more pure and retro horror story than the Black Collection series. However, if we follow the path of Friday the 13th, it is worth paying attention to how to perform this already poorly performed routine.
In short, as the plot progresses, players will find that the Hackett Quarry is not an ordinary summer camp. The bodies sinking at the bottom of the lake, the eerie locals, the unknown creatures that would suddenly launch attacks in the forest, the accidents that occurred in the quarry many years ago, and a series of mysteries are gradually attacking this group of young people, and players need to make choices for them to guide the direction of the story. Regarding only the three chapters I have experienced, my personal favorite is that the horror of the game mainly relies on the atmosphere to create, unlike the many sudden and frightening scenes in the Black Collection series.
There are quite a few scenarios in the game where players can actually intervene, and most interventions can significantly affect the direction of the story. In addition to selecting different dialogues or actions for characters and basic elements such as QTE during actions, players also need to pay close attention to the interactive elements in the scene, which may be clues or evidence that can influence the direction of the story.
In addition, I am personally interested in the Tarot card system of this game. In the process of manipulating character activities, we can find tarot cards hidden in the scene, interact with them, collect them, and seem to provide suggestions for our future choices through interpretation.
I tried to follow the suggestions in the trial version, but perhaps due to limited unlocking chapters, I haven't been able to see their specific impact yet. Is this a tip provided for careful players or a smoke bomb intentionally affecting their judgment?
In short, according to previous official statements, this game claims to have 186 different endings, and the outcome depends on the choices made by the player in each intervenable node. I don't know how many weeks it takes to get a ending that I like.
Fortunately, this game provides a rich range of customizable auxiliary functions, such as whether QTE needs to be completely pressed correctly or can be pressed casually or not at all, making choices, and whether the QTE time limit is long or short, all of which have multiple settings to choose from. This game even provides a movie mode, which allows you to go through the process without any interaction. For players who are too lazy to operate and only want to achieve the desired outcome, having such a choice is definitely better than not having one.
It is worth mentioning that "Quarry Cry" offers two multiplayer modes. One is to allow players to give the choice to up to 7 friends who play online together to vote and decide the direction of the plot; Another type is the cooperative mode, where each player operates one instructor. For interactive movies like this, the multiplayer mode is quite new, but unfortunately the trial version did not provide this mode, and I was unable to try it out.
For those who enjoy horror games and movies, Quarry Cry should be a work worth paying attention to. Famous Hollywood actors including David Arquette (Scream), Ariel Winter (Modern Family), Justice Smith (Jurassic World), Brenda Song (Baby Face), Lance Henriksen (Alien), and Lin Shaye (Midnight Ghost Bedding) are also a major attraction of this work. From the trial version, the micro expressions of the characters are vivid, and the facial capture technology in this game largely showcases the actors' superb acting skills.
As for whether "Quarry Fear" can bring horror fans a satisfying thriller journey, it depends on the performance of the official version on June 10th. This game will be available on June 10th on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, and PC.
