FC Detective Club is a super old game that most players are not familiar with now, but it is still so mischievous.
Speaking of the recently released remastered version of FC Detective Club on the Switch platform, we really want to thank Nintendo. Thank you to them for bringing back two text adventure games that were born in the era of disk drives, in this era of AVG scarcity.
It is not easy to play excellent text adventure games nowadays. Completely new works are very rare, and the stories of the somewhat famous old buddies "Extreme Escape" and the newcomer "Bullet Theory" have come to an end. Some IPs, like "God of Pop," have exhausted their talents.
If remaking this excellent old game can receive good feedback, it will undoubtedly give people hope for similar games.
Of course, in addition to the mischievous elements at the beginning of the article, the remastered version has also been optimized in all aspects, making it a niche masterpiece.
Thank you Nintendo for playing this game!
Firstly, just like the two pictures released above, playing an FC game was really not easy in the past... Those who are unlucky may not have even seen the honest guy's profile picture in "The Lost Inheritor".
Of course, the abbot grandpa in the same work, as well as the Konki detective in "The Girl Standing Behind", may also have texture errors.
I don't quite understand the principle behind why the disk drive is experiencing this situation. It's probably similar to poor contact or dirt on the gold finger on the FC cartridge.
Secondly, in addition to these visual impact bugs, limited by the machine's capabilities and the capacity of the game board, we often have to remove the game board, switch from side A to side B (sometimes B → A), and wait for the game to load, and players also have to go through this operation every time they save.
In addition, what is even more uncomfortable is that many old games back then used hiragana and katakana texts in order for elementary school students to understand text. Even if they learned Japanese, it looked very tiring...
Many of the above issues can be considered "tears of the times", and are no longer considered problems for mature technologies today. Nowadays, texture bugs no longer exist, and there is no need to change the disk to go to a specific location or save. The game text can be read normally, and even in Chinese.
Although the original version is also excellent, how many players today are willing to play the game with such great effort? So the original game is now a 3-minute dissuasion game, and we really want to thank Nintendo for remaking it and making it more user-friendly.
Details and expressiveness have become stronger, please thank Nintendo!
Many aspects of the two "FC Detective Club" have been optimized in the remake, and I believe friends who have played the original will have a more empathetic experience.
For example, the remastered OP is no longer a monotonous black screen with text, but has added a game style background painting, and the cold text has also been dynamically expressed. Although the original pixel graphics were also exquisitely crafted, the current OP is clearly more expressive.
Compared to the original version, each version has its own unique expressive power
Nowadays, text adventure games mainly showcase their charm through text, visuals, and music, often equivalent to an audio novel, because even if you remove the visuals, just reading the text still holds true. The visuals and music only enhance the expressive power of the text.
But the original version of FC Detective Club is different, as many of its text is based on the visuals. If the script of a typical text adventure game is a complete novel, then the original version of FC Detective Club is closer to the script of a stage play or play.
Apart from the protagonist's self talk and conversations with other characters, there are few lengthy descriptions of the environment and psychological activities, and players rely solely on watching the screen and text to make their own judgments.
For example, in the original version of "The Disappearing Inheritor," when the protagonist asked Qian about the burnt marks on the ground, she remained silent and only provided a paragraph of "!...", which was very vivid.
Although the above approach is very skillful, there is also a helpless factor of technical limitations. In the remastered version, this scene has been described in more detail, and Qian will make a series of actions to express fear. Now everyone can tell at a glance that she has a problem.
Many descriptions that were primarily written in the original version were enhanced through dynamic visuals in the remastered version, but each of these two expressions has its own strengths. Just like how computer systems transition from Dos to Windows 95, Dos users find Windows 95 unable to issue commands directly, and Windows 95 users find Dos not easy to understand.
In addition to the different ways of expression, many parts of the game that originally lacked details were also portrayed through animation and other means. For example, in the original work, the beautiful colleague Bu Mei had a lot of interaction with the protagonist, but the added details in the remake made the relationship between the two feel even closer.
At the beginning of "The Lost Inheritor", the protagonist investigates the scene of amnesia, and the stunning scene of her beautiful long hair and skirt fluttering in the wind on the cliff is breathtaking.
Before the start of Chapter 2, when Bu Mei and the protagonist conducted separate investigations, their interaction was also not present in the original work.
Combined with voice, humor and courage are superior
Another aspect of enhancing expressive power is also reflected in music and speech.
The background music of FC platform games is naturally 8-bit music, which is very flavorful when combined with pixel graphics. However, when combined with today's graphics, it may appear somewhat inconsistent. Therefore, this game has remade all BGMs and played the original BGM in a modern way. After listening to two types of music, I personally still think the new version of BGM is better.
If there are old players who particularly enjoy the original FC music ("Girl Standing Behind" has been remade in SFC, so there is also an SFC version of BGM music), it can also be changed in the settings.
Of course, the voice has the greatest impact on the game. The two remakes have dubbed all the characters, for example, in "The Girl Standing Behind", even JK, a passerby at the school gate, and the old man passing by has full voice acting.
In the original version of "The Lost Inheritor," Dr. Kumata is a hilarious character, with many scenes that make people laugh uncontrollably. With his voice, he becomes like a runaway wild horse, even able to steal the limelight of the game's main storyline.
In addition, there is also a significant voice difference at critical moments of the plot. For example, in the ending of "The Girl Standing Behind", the dim scene illuminated by lightning and thunder in the original version, combined with the ugly and evil face of the real culprit, is already frightening. This time, the addition of superb voice acting makes people's hearts race even faster.
I won't go into detail about spoilers here. Please feel free to experience them while playing the game.
By the way, if you feel like you've heard the same voice of the protagonist recently, then maybe you've just played "Bullet Theory".
The script from decades ago was so excellent, please thank Nintendo!
Whether it's "The Missing Inheritor" or "The Girl Standing Behind", the script is excellent. Although it has a strong sense of time, it is completely timeless even today.
Firstly, the scripts of both works should be considered "authentic", and the amount of information obtained by the player and the protagonist should be equal. As clues appear one by one, players can reason while playing. Sometimes, with sufficient evidence, players can fully follow the protagonist's thoughts and simultaneously speculate on the true culprit and the method of committing the crime, creating a strong sense of immersion.
Of course, this does not mean that the game script does not have surprises, but rather surprises will come concentrated and sudden. The plot of the last few chapters will develop in one breath, with various small foreshadowings appearing in addition to the evidence obtained on the spot, and the amount of information exploding to the point where it is difficult to digest in one breath.
Secondly, these two "serious" works also incorporate elements of bizarre anecdotes, making the originally dull reasoning process very interesting. "The Disappearing Inheritor" is a theme of "curse" that brings people back to life from death. Listening to passersby solemnly saying that they saw the dead, I was also a bit afraid of Jump Scare.
"The Girl Standing Behind" combines ghost tales, which are more creepy than curses, and are closer to her surroundings.
In actual games, rumors are also false and real. Before the answer is revealed, I don't even know if I believe in science or ghosts and gods. However, what can be revealed to everyone is that both works are exceptionally "off topic", especially the ending scene of "The Girl Standing Behind" is the finishing touch. While I was scared to pee, I applauded and exclaimed.
In addition, there are many parody elements in the script, which add a bit of humor to games with relatively heavy atmosphere. For example, Game Over at the beginning of the article was added to the SFC version of "Girl Standing Behind".
Of course, there are several hidden elements in the game that are not easy to discover, all of which are newly added in this remake. If everyone delves deep enough, they may unexpectedly see the new "ending".
Thank Nintendo for this question, but it's useless
The original FC Detective Club series is a carefully crafted text adventure game with meticulous attention to detail. For example, in "The Disappearing Inheritor," when investigating a female colleague named Bu Mei at a detective agency, she would say, "It's very shy of you to stare at them like that.". These details are not forgotten to be restored in the remake.
Unfortunately, this series has a fatal flaw - the pace is too slow (although it has already accelerated).
Firstly, it should be noted that Nintendo has made many optimizations in terms of slow pace, such as using yellow text to remind players of what to choose next, and adding a fast forward button to shorten the waiting time for players to repeat questions and surveys. The fundamental system of the game is questioning, investigation, and reasoning. Without changing the core gameplay, slow pace is still an inevitable trend.
Secondly, the slow pace of the game is both an advantage and a major failure, which can be said to be very contradictory.
For example, in the plot, we may encounter characters who do not cooperate with the player's investigation. Asking them any questions is a string of ellipses, but these questions must be asked before they can trigger the next plot or action.
On the one hand, this is the difficulty of expressing detective investigation clues through the game system of this game; On the other hand, this unnecessary operation is simply making people vomit blood.
The completely hands-on operation undoubtedly makes this game more emphasizing "gameplay" than mainstream text adventure games nowadays, but it is obvious that lengthy investigations and inquiries can make people drowsy and damage the gaming experience.
In fact, the script of the game itself is not long, but if players who are playing this game for the first time fail to keep up with the ideas of the game writers, most of the time will be spent on checkpoints. Despite playing a single volume novel for several days, I still haven't seen the ending.
As an old-fashioned text-based adventure game, FC Detective Club has absolutely excellent overall quality, especially its excellent script combined with game performance, which can shake off many current unimaginative detective games.
But precisely because of its age, the slow pace of the game has become difficult to adapt to the current environment, which may also become a reason to discourage many players.
Overall, we should be grateful to Nintendo and MAGES, Thank you for making these two old works more accessible to current players, for adding voice, and for producing Chinese... If you're not someone who's too busy to touch the ground, taking a break and playing with these two works can be a meaningful archaeological experience.
I can't wait to see the end of their remake of the Detective Club series.
